Biography

Giancarlo Giannini is an Italian actor born in La Spezia who started on stage, making his debut at eighteen and later appearing in Franco Zeffirelli's stagings of Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream. After early television work, he took his first film lead in Rita the Mosquito (1965), starting a long collaboration with Lina Wertmüller. That partnership brought international attention through The Seduction of Mimi (1972), Love and Anarchy (1973), for which he won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, and Seven Beauties (1975), which earned him an Academy Award nomination. He has won the David di Donatello Award for Best Actor four times. His later screen work includes A Walk in the Clouds (1995), Hannibal (2001), Man on Fire (2004), Darkness (2002), and the James Bond films Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008). He has also dubbed many films into Italian, notably as the main Italian voice of Al Pacino since 1975.
