Plot summary
Five children live in Adriano Setti's house, and their mother has died. For a long time, if ever, he had taken little interest in their lives. Now both the father's part and the mother's part in the household fall to him, and the work overwhelms him. In the same period he becomes involved with a much younger woman, and in her company his own youth comes back to him.
