Plot summary
Eager to explore Europe, Charlie, a hard-partying recent graduate, spends his parents' $5,000 check on a plane ticket to Italy instead of finding a job. On the flight he meets Lele, the self-proclaimed King of Bologna, who offers him a place to stay. Robbed just outside the Rome airport and speaking no Italian, Charlie makes his way to Bologna and moves in with Lele, Badoo, a scraggly gutter punk, and Il Pisa, an insatiable whoremonger. Lele schools him in the techniques of Italian seduction, all-night parties and general chaos, and Charlie settles into the routine, charming the dangerously beautiful Valentina and Vicky, an all-American.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about AmeriQua (2013)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Vito Facciolla and Edoardo Pesce were among the trio playing mafiosi who kept their costumes on one evening in Bologna and were mistaken by passersby for genuine shady characters. They went to local pubs pretending to demand protection money, and the police were called.
- Alec Baldwin's cameo came about because of his friendship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the actor's father. Glenn Close was reportedly cast as Baldwin's wife and Charlie's mother, but the part went to Catherine Mary Stewart.
- Shooting Alessandra Mastronardi's first scenes in Piazza Maggiore with dogs, Robert F. Kennedy III stuffed hot dog meat into the actors' shoes so the dogs would follow them, but put too much in his own shoe and sometimes tripped over the dogs.
- A day of heavy rain that inundated Bologna forced Kennedy and the directors to reimagine a scene that would otherwise have been hard to shoot. The result was a scene of Kennedy and Mastronardi dancing in a church.
- The Alitalia flight scenes were filmed in a flight simulator outside Fiumicino Airport in Rome. Cloud shapes were cut out to pass by the windows, so it would look from inside the plane as though it was flying past clouds.
- The film's final scene, which is also its opening scene, the exterior of Wagner College, was shot in early December in freezing temperatures although the story is set in July and the actors wear T-shirts. CGI was later used to add leaves to the trees.
- Kennedy based the screenplay on his own time as a "broke student" in Bologna in 2005, where he waited tables and tended bar and met the "stock of wild characters" who populate the film.
- The ragù scene caused nausea among some people on set because of a "sickening smell", and it was one of the hardest scenes from a design point of view, along with Valentina's birthday party, Lele's house and the university dormitory.
