Plot summary
Moe Berg plays for the Boston Red Sox in 1936, near the end of a fifteen-year career in the majors. On a goodwill exhibition tour of Japan he makes his way onto a hospital roof in Tokyo and films the harbor and the Navy shipyards. That film, along with the languages he picked up at Princeton and elsewhere, persuades the Office of Strategic Services to hire him in 1943. Werner Heisenberg, winner of the 1932 Nobel Prize in physics, runs Nazi Germany's push for an atomic bomb. Berg is moved into Italy and then Switzerland to find out how far along Heisenberg is, with orders to kill him if a weapon is near.
