Plot summary
In 1945, United States Army Sergeant Paul Sutton comes back from the war to San Francisco and to Betty, the wife he married the day before he shipped out. She stopped reading his letters long ago and keeps them unopened. He takes a job selling chocolates door to door and boards a bus for Sacramento, where he meets Victoria Aragon, a graduate student from a Napa Valley vineyard family. When two men on the bus accost her, Paul steps in and the three are put off the bus. Further down the road he finds Victoria crying: she is pregnant by her professor and dreads telling her father, a man who holds to old tradition. Paul offers to present himself to her family as her husband.
