Plot summary

In the early years of the 19th century, Edoardo and Carlotta, who had been in love twenty years before, find each other again and marry. They settle at his Tuscan villa, where they spend a year of happiness. Edoardo then begs to invite his friend and associate Ottone, an architect, to join them at the villa. Carlotta has forebodings of disaster but relents. Once Ottone has arrived, she invites her teenage godchild Ottilia to stay as well, to balance the dynamics among the four of them. Ottilia stirs Edoardo, and Ottone and Carlotta are drawn to each other. The harmony of the place comes undone.
