Plot summary

At a Festa de l'Unità in Rome, the florist Adelaide Ciafrocchi tells Oreste Nardi, a middle-aged communist bricklayer, that she once watched him pass the flower stand she keeps at the Campo Verano cemetery. They fall in love, though Oreste is married to the much older Antonia, who confronts Adelaide at the stand and attacks her; Adelaide ends up in the hospital. Oreste visits her there and says he has left Antonia, so the two are free to be together. Adelaide eats with Oreste at a pizzeria, where Nello Serafini, the young Tuscan chef, notices her and sends a heart-shaped pizza to her table. Oreste and Nello both attend a PCI protest march and later bond, and Oreste introduces Nello to Adelaide. The three become inseparable friends.
