Plot summary
Constantinople, 1401. The Turks have killed the Byzantine emperor's only son, and the aging ruler cannot lead his troops himself. The knight Tirant lo Blanc reaches the port with a small band of Almogavars and is made commander of the imperial army, which must hold off an Ottoman invasion. At court he catches sight of Carmesina, the emperor's surviving daughter, and the two are drawn to each other. Her guardian Ines, known as the Placid Widow, tells the girl that a man with no royal blood and no fortune can never marry the heiress. Her ladies Pleasure-of-My-Life and Estefania disagree and encourage the match. The empress, believing the city cannot survive an Ottoman attack, weighs giving her daughter to the sultan in marriage.
