Plot summary
The last day of World War I finds Erich Lohkamp, Otto Koster and Gottfried Lenz flying German fighter planes and speaking fatalistically about what comes next. In civilian life the three open an auto-repair shop that barely covers their needs. In the spring of 1920 they drive to a country inn, where they meet Pat Hollmann and an older, wealthy man named Breuer. Pat comes from an aristocratic family that has lost its money, and she takes an interest in the innocent Erich. They begin seeing each other. At the opera they run into Breuer, who invites them to a nightclub; Erich leaves early, ashamed of his place in society. Pat assures him that her feelings for him matter more than their different backgrounds.
