Plot summary
In Sydney, Mr Flannery, the Premier of New South Wales, summons Scobie Malone and gives him an order: fly to London and arrest Sir James Quentin, the Australian High Commissioner in Britain. Quentin is a political rival of the Premier and the only suspect in a murder committed seventeen years earlier. At the Australian High Commission, Malone meets Lady Quentin and her husband. Sir James does not object to being taken into custody, but he wants a few days at liberty first, so that delicate peace negotiations can be brought to a close. Malone stays as a guest of the High Commission while he waits, and finds that a plot to kill Quentin is already in motion.
