Plot summary
Louise Storr arrives in Iowa from New York, newly divorced and a stranger to the family she is coming to see. Her paternal grandfather, Cyrus Tatum Storr, is eighty-five and runs a large farm with hired hands and a household of distant relatives who have lived there for years. They take the city granddaughter in with reserve. Grandpa Storr makes no secret of preferring Louise, his close blood kin, and that favor sets the household against her. The relatives and the farm hands test her at the chores of the place, and her good sense holds. On the adjoining property lives Guy Crane, a college-educated Iowan, married, whose company she finds attractive.
