Plot summary
June 1942. Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps has broken the British line in North Africa, and Corporal John J. Bramble, the last man of his tank crew, crosses the desert on foot to Sidi Halfaya. The town's hotel, owned by Farid, is nearly empty: the cook has gone and the waiter Davos died the night before in a German bombing raid, leaving the French chambermaid Mouche as the only other worker. Advancing German troops turn the place into Rommel's headquarters, and Bramble, to save himself, lets them take him for Davos. Mouche resents the British for Dunkirk and keeps her distance, while Bramble learns from Rommel himself that the man whose name he has borrowed was a German spy trusted with a mission to Cairo.

- Brigadier Dudley Clarke, who commanded the British deception department in Cairo, saw Five Graves to Cairo in January 1944 and created Operation Copperhead, sending pre-war actor Lieutenant M. E. Clifton James, a Montgomery look-alike, to Mediterranean bases days before D-Day to fool German intelligence.
- A Hollywood Reporter item said David O. Selznick agreed in November 1942 to lend Ingrid Bergman for the film, but Paramount borrowed Anne Baxter from Twentieth Century-Fox instead, and Simone Simon also tested for the role.
- The German tanks in the film are American M2 light tanks that had been used for training, while British forces at the time had the American M3 Medium tank.
- Exteriors for the town of Sidi Halfaya, a fictionalized version of Sidi Barrani, were shot at the Salton Sea, and at Camp Young in Indio, California, the Army Ground Forces cooperated in staging a battle sequence.
