Plot summary
In 1805 England, Quality Street has few eligible bachelors. Twenty-year-old Phoebe Throssel is hopeful when Dr. Valentine Brown says he has important news, and she and her older sister Susan expect a proposal. He has instead enlisted to fight in the Napoleonic Wars. Phoebe conceals her feelings and gives up on marriage. For ten years she and Susan run a school for boys and girls. Patty, their servant, is a decade older than Phoebe and sure she will get a man. When the wars end, Brown returns a captain and invites the sisters to a ball, startled by how much her looks appear to have faded. She declines. She then puts on a fine gown, and Patty presents her to him as her niece, Livy.
