Plot summary
Mickey works as a stand-up comic in Detroit. When the Mafia turns against him he leaves the city and makes his way to Chicago, where he takes the Social Security card of a homeless man named Miklos Wunejeva. Under the name Mickey One he finds work carrying garbage for a diner, saves his pay, rents a room in a flop house and buys new clothes. He goes back on stage, but he is careful about success, afraid that too much attention will bring the mob after him again. He is booked at the upscale club Xanadu, where his first rehearsal becomes an audition for a man he cannot see.

- Warren Beatty and director Arthur Penn feuded throughout the making of Mickey One. Beatty later said he never understood what Penn was trying to do and that the film's stand-up gags, which he had to perform, were not funny; producer Harrison Starr recalled the two had "go-arounds".
- After years of obscurity, Mickey One was rediscovered in 1995, starting with a booking at San Francisco's Castro Theater and a reevaluation by Peter Stack.
