Plot summary
Liz Wetherly is a popular singer who wants time away from a busy schedule. Driving through the South on a road trip, she takes a wrong turn and her car breaks down, leaving her stranded in a remote town that has been left for dead since the interstate went in. The only place to spend the night is Bertha's Oasis, the rundown lodge of Bertha, a former burlesque performer who keeps a much younger boyfriend, Eddie, and a group of odd townsfolk around her. Eddie sees himself as a singer to rival Elvis and wants Liz to make him a star.

- Backing for the film came from Atlanta businessman Michael Thevis, known as "The King of Pornography", who owned sex shops, a record company and peep show booths. He used the production to launder money from Mafia dealings, which drew FBI attention; he was jailed and, after a 1978 prison escape, put on the FBI's most-wanted list.
- Shelley Winters, the film's biggest star, was flown to the 1973 Athens, Georgia shoot on a private plane that nearly crashed on landing.

A wholly alternate version was exhibited as Heartbreak Motel, featuring voiceover narration by Eddie and edited like a filmed play: action scenes were cut for long dialogue, and the climactic gun battle was replaced by Eddie getting a recording contract and leaving Georgia for Nashville.- Most of the people involved in making the film were, at the time, nominally employed in the world of adult films, and the picture was a chance for them to appear in mainstream movies.
