Plot summary
Davie Burnie lives at Grassy, the family plantation in post-Civil War Kentucky, with his aunts Effie and Lou and his friend Thad. Ben, a former slave, brings word that Davie's father hid a treasure map inside a book in the house. Captain Spangler, a Northern carpetbagger and an old enemy of the family, raids the plantation; Effie urges the boys to run, and Ben tears the map from the book and passes it to them. Davie and Thad take cheap passage down the Mississippi toward New Orleans. Lauriette Paxton, a runaway bride, is found aboard as a stowaway, and Spangler takes up their trail, determined to have the map.
