Biography

Steve McQueen was an American actor who became a top box office draw from the late 1950s to the mid-1970s, known for an antihero persona and nicknamed the King of Cool. Born in Beech Grove, Indiana, in 1930, he trained in New York at the Neighborhood Playhouse and HB Studio before moving to Los Angeles. His first film role under manager Hilly Elkins was a bit part in Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956), and he broke through on television in Wanted Dead or Alive before starring in The Magnificent Seven (1960). He received an Academy Award nomination for The Sand Pebbles (1966) and appeared in Bullitt (1968), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), The Getaway (1972), Papillon (1973), and The Towering Inferno (1974). His final two films, Tom Horn and The Hunter, came out in 1980. He died in 1980.

  1. First role

    In 1952, McQueen spoke his first theater dialogue in a play staged by Molly Picon, a star of Yiddish theater. His character had just one short line: "Alts iz farloyrn," meaning "All is lost."

  2. Early training

    In 1952, McQueen used G.I. Bill funding to start acting classes in New York. He trained at Sanford Meisner's Neighborhood Playhouse and at HB Studio, where Uta Hagen taught.

  3. Own stunts

    McQueen took part in off-road motorcycle racing. He often rode a BSA Hornet and went by the alias Harvey Mushman.

  4. Big break

    At 29, McQueen got a break when Sinatra took Sammy Davis Jr. out of Never So Few and gave the part to McQueen. Sinatra thought McQueen had something special and made sure he got many closeups.

  5. A role that slipped away

    McQueen turned down the lead in Breakfast at Tiffany's because his Wanted: Dead or Alive contract prevented him from accepting it.

  6. A role that slipped away

    McQueen was Steven Spielberg's first choice for Roy Neary in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but he declined because he could not cry on cue, and the role went to Richard Dreyfuss.
