Plot summary
Jack Dundee works as a banker in Taft, California, who cannot put down the memory of a 1972 high school football game in which his Taft side met Bakersfield and ended in a tie, sealed when he dropped a pass thrown perfectly to him in the closing seconds. His employer is his father-in-law, the Colonel, a Bakersfield man who reminds him of the drop nearly every day. Fourteen years on, Reno Hightower, the quarterback of that game, fixes vans for a living, is short of money and owes Jack's bank, and his wife Gigi has left him again, dreaming of being discovered in Los Angeles. A massage expert named Darla hears Jack's complaints and suggests a rematch. The Colonel agrees to one, Jack's wife Elly refuses him intimacy to push him off the idea, and Reno must be persuaded.
