Plot summary

Will Stockdale comes from the backwoods of Georgia with enormous strength and a weak mind, and the Air Force has drafted him. On the way to basic training he meets Ben Whitledge, a dim fellow recruit who wants the infantry, the branch his six brothers served in, and Irving S. Blanchard, a bully. Will and Ben are both outsiders among the draftees, and they become friends. At boot camp Will's simple ways make life hard for the men around him, though he seldom sees it. Master Sergeant Orville C. King, a career soldier who keeps his barracks routine and stays clear of the officers above him, now has Will under his command.
