Anthony James
Biography
Anthony James was an American character actor who built a long career playing villains, mostly in Westerns and crime dramas. Born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, he reversed his given name and surname for the screen. He made numerous guest appearances on television, among them Gunsmoke, where he played Elbert Moses in several episodes, along with Hawaii Five-O, Bonanza and Star Trek: The Next Generation. His first major film role came as the diner counterman Ralph in In the Heat of the Night (1967), followed by parts in ...tick...tick...tick... (1970), High Plains Drifter (1973), Burnt Offerings (1976), Blue Thunder (1983), Nightmares (1983) and The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991). He retired in the early 1990s after playing the saloonkeeper Skinny Dubois in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992). He later concentrated on painting and published a collection of his art and poetry, followed by an autobiography in 2014. He died in 2020.
