Don 'Red' Barry
Biography
Don Barry was an American actor who worked in films and television, getting his start on the New York stage in a late 1930s production of Tobacco Road. Born in Houston, he entered movies as an extra and in small roles, and John Wayne helped introduce him to producers. He took his nickname from playing the first Red Ryder in Adventures of Red Ryder (1940), a Republic Pictures hit that none of his later, bigger budget films matched. He became a Western regular, with parts in Seven Men from Now (1956), Alvarez Kelly (1966) and Shalako (1968), later working mostly in supporting roles. He appeared in many television Westerns, including The Virginian and Little House on the Prairie, and played Red Doyle on a 1964 Perry Mason episode. He also wrote the stories behind Red Light (1949), Train to Tombstone (1950) and Convict Stage (1965), and co-wrote, directed and starred in Jesse James' Women (1954).
