Plot summary
Bandits attacking a wagon are driven off by Boss and Amos, who save Clara Mae. Inspecting the bodies, the two Black bounty hunters find reward notices and a letter from Mayor Griffin of San Miguel inviting its bearer to become sheriff on the recommendation of the fugitive Jed Clayton. They escort Clara Mae to San Miguel and meet Griffin, knowing the town has no sheriff and holding proof the badge was meant for one of Clayton's gang. Boss outsmarts the mayor and gets the council to give him the position; with Amos he enforces fines and jail time for anyone who calls either of them a slur in public. Boss also meets Miss Pruitt, a schoolteacher whose fond memories of her family's slaves offend him.
