Plot summary
During the Civil War, Confederate riders under Captain Pierre Cordona and Sergeant Tuscarora Phillips raid a Union payroll train, and Colonel Cord McNally loses a friend in the fight. The raiders knew too much, so McNally believes Union men gave them the details. He captures Cordona and Tuscarora, who refuse to name anyone. After the war ends, McNally asks them again; all they can offer is a description of two men, and they agree to get in touch if they ever see them. Sheriff Pat Cronin of Blackthorne, Texas, sends word that Cordona wants to see him, and there McNally meets Shasta Delaney, who is there to report a murder.

- Quentin Tarantino named Rio Lobo as one of the reasons he wanted a short directing career, saying he did not want to be one of the artists who stay at the party too long and make late films out of touch with the world.
- Rio Lobo was to be shot in Durango, Mexico, on a $5 million budget, but the film Lawman was using the facilities there, so Howard Hawks and Cinema Center spent an extra $1 million to shoot in Cuernavaca and at Old Tucson Studios near Tucson instead.
- Howard Hawks said he had to fight Cinema Center to cast Chris Mitchum, the son of actor Robert Mitchum, and had originally wanted Robert Mitchum as Cardona but his salary demands were too high.
