Plot summary

Mrs. Brisby's youngest son is chosen to lead Thorn Valley, and his older brother Martin, who thinks the honor should have been his, leaves to find his own adventure. Jeremy flies Timmy to Thorn Valley, where residents welcome him and Justin, leader of the rats, and Mr. Ages take him as a student. Years of training teach him to improvise and think on his feet, but he has trouble following orders. During a scavenger mission he meets Jenny McBride, whose parents were among the mice thought to have died escaping NIMH. She tells him they survived and are still trapped, and that the institute plans something for the next full moon. The council calls a rescue too dangerous. Timmy chooses to help her.
