Plot summary
In twelfth-century England, Norman lords hold power over the Saxons. A miller poaching deer on the King's land is caught by a hunting party led by the knight Sir Miles Folcanet. He flees and runs into the Saxon earl Robert Hode and his friend Will, and Will urges Hode to intercede when the Normans threaten to put out the miller's eyes. Folcanet demands that Hode be punished, and the shire-reeve Roger Daguerre, Hode's friend, orders a lash for Hode after he apologizes.
