Plot summary
Katherine Winter, a former Christian missionary, investigates reports of religious phenomena and looks for scientific causes. She works with her colleague Ben. Doug Blackwell, a teacher in the Louisiana town of Haven, asks her why the river there has turned red. The residents believe a biblical plague has come, and they blame a girl, Loren McConnell, for the death of her older brother. Katherine travels to Haven to examine the river for herself.
