Plot summary
In A.D. 117 the Roman conquest of northern Britain has ground to a halt against the guerrilla tactics of the Picts. Pictish warriors overrun the frontier outpost of Pinnata Castra, killing the garrison and taking its second-in-command, Centurion Quintus Dias, alive because he speaks their language. He is brought before King Gorlacon and questioned, then escapes on foot. In Britannia, the governor Gnaeus Julius Agricola wants a victory to send home to the Senate, so he orders the Ninth Legion north under General Titus Flavius Virilus to destroy the Picts and their leader. The legion comes across Dias on the march and takes him into Caledonia, with a Brigantian scout guiding the column.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Paul Freeman plays the Roman governor Agricola in Centurion, but the real Julius Agricola governed Britannia about 30 years before the events shown and was already dead before Hadrian's Wall was built; the governor at the time was Quintus Pompeius Falco.
- The film draws on the legend of the Ninth Legion, said to have marched into Scotland from York with over 3,000 men and vanished; historians dispute its fate, some saying it was disbanded, others that it was massacred in Germania or in the East fighting the Persians.
