Trailer

Plot summary

In Suffolk, a grandmother, her daughter and her niece all carry the name Cissie Colpitts. Each is married to a man she has tired of, and each arrives at the same way of dealing with him: drowning. Henry Madgett, the local coroner, is an old friend of the family who has long been fond of the Colpitts women, and he is the one who obscures what has happened. His son Smut recites the rules of unusual games as though they were ancient customs. Numbers from one to a hundred appear in the scenes, spoken or printed on cattle. The three women come to Madgett one after another, and the repeated requests weigh on his conscience.

  • The filmmakers hid a clue to their key musical source in plain sight: the soundtrack album's back cover displays the number 58, matching the number the film's Skipping Girl, played by Natalie Morse, reaches in her counting game, both pointing to the crucial bars of the Mozart piece the score is built from.
