Plot summary
Henry VIII of England has no male heir with his wife, Katherine of Aragon, and the marriage is in trouble. Mary Boleyn weds Sir William Carey, one of the king's courtiers. Her father and her uncle, the Duke of Norfolk, want the Boleyns to rise at court, and they settle on a plan: Anne, the older sister, will become the king's mistress. Anne agrees, expecting that a noble marriage will follow. On a hunt Henry is injured, and Mary tends his wounds; he is drawn to her. The Boleyns gain standing at court; the sisters serve the queen as ladies-in-waiting, and Carey is dispatched overseas as an ambassador. Henry turns his attention to Mary.
