Plot summary
Charles Schine works in advertising in Chicago and rides a commuter train downtown each morning. His wife is Deanna, and their daughter Amy has type 1 diabetes, which needs costly treatment; the family has been saving for it. On the train he meets Lucinda Harris, a married financial advisor with a daughter of her own. The two begin meeting, and one evening they take a room in a cheap hotel. An armed man bursts in, robs them and beats Charles, and rapes Lucinda. Because she does not want her husband to learn about the affair, Lucinda talks Charles out of reporting the crime. Days later the man, who calls himself Philippe LaRoche, telephones Charles and threatens to kill his family unless he hands over $20,000.
