Peter Bowles
Biography
Peter Bowles was an English actor of stage and screen. Born in Kensington, London, he trained at RADA on a scholarship, won its Kendall Prize, and began with the Old Vic Company in 1956 in small Shakespeare roles. In early television he was cast mostly as villains, often foreign ones, before gaining prominence in dramas such as I, Claudius and Callan: A Magnum for Schneider. He became best known as Richard DeVere in To the Manor Born and as Archie Glover in Only When I Laugh, with later television work including Guthrie Featherstone in Rumpole of the Bailey, Lytton's Diary, The Irish R.M., Executive Stress and Perfect Scoundrels. He co-produced Running Late, which won the Golden Gate Award in 1993, and from 2016 to 2019 played the Duke of Wellington in Victoria. He wrote an autobiography, Ask Me if I'm Happy, in 2010, and a book on acting, Behind the Curtain, in 2012. He died in 2022.
