Plot summary
Libria rose after a third World War, and it blames human emotion for conflict. Art, literature and music are banned, and every citizen receives a daily dose of Prozium II. Those who refuse are Sense Offenders, sentenced to death. Father leads the Tetragrammaton Council through giant video screens, and the Grammaton Clerics, trained in gun kata, head the police. John Preston serves as a high-ranking Cleric. His wife Viviana was put to death as a Sense Offender, and he raises two children alone. During a raid he sees his fellow Cleric Errol Partridge hold back a volume of poetry by W. B. Yeats from the flames, then follows him to the Nether, the land outside the city, where Partridge reads it. Preston's last vial of Prozium breaks, and he finds no replacement before the next raid.
