Plot summary
The de Montfaucon family has owned land in Bellenac, a wine-growing region of France, for generations. When the vineyards fail, Philippe de Montfaucon leaves Paris for the estate, and his wife Catherine follows with their children Jacques and Antoinette, though he asked her not to come. In Bellenac, Catherine watches Christian de Caray shoot a dove with a bow and arrow, and notices that his sister Odile appears to hold a hypnotic power over anyone she looks at. Philippe seems transfixed by the place. Although Christian and Odile's behavior threatens Catherine and the children, she stays to learn what is happening and to save her husband.

- Kim Novak, who had been cast as the lead opposite David Niven, was thrown from a horse two weeks before filming was due to end and injured her back. She was replaced by Deborah Kerr, and nearly three-quarters of the footage already shot had to be reshot.
- David Hemmings disputed that Kim Novak was replaced because of an injury. He wrote that he saw her argue bitterly with producer Martin Ransohoff near the end of filming, and claimed she was fired as a result.
- Eye of the Devil was the last black-and-white film released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer; by 1967, all the major studios had effectively moved entirely to color.
- The film acquired a degree of cult status, credited not only to its surreal themes but to the murder of Sharon Tate in 1969.
- Kim Novak had already filmed long shots before her injury, and some of them did make it into the finished movie, which resumed filming in December 1965 with Deborah Kerr.
- Alex Sanders, an English occultist and Wiccan, was hired as a consultant to give the pagan rites in the film some authenticity.
