Plot summary
Cut off from their unit, three British paratroopers are stranded and lost behind enemy lines. They shelter in a deserted farmhouse and wait for their sergeant, who has gone out to try to find the unit. Tom is a world-weary, cynical veteran of the fighting; John is middle-class and educated, a thinker who despises the war; Cliff is an eager soldier who loves his work. Each of the three is a trained professional killer who carries out his duties without hesitation, whatever he privately thinks about the war. A German paratrooper named Helmut, who speaks English, becomes their captive, a soldier like themselves.
