Plot summary
Taura mines crystals on the planet Arous and employs the local dwarf miners, who are defiant toward their rulers. Captain Bantor, sent with the Sovereign and the Inquisitor to put down the uprising, tries to claim the mined crystals for the Magistrate, and confronts Taura. She defends herself against the captain, and during their struggle a volcanic acid plume costs him a hand. Taura is sentenced to a term aboard the prison ship Vehemence under the warden Exene, where she finds life among the other female inmates tough before she makes a friend in Mike.

- Fred Olen Ray rented Roger Corman's New World Pictures studio in Venice, California, for two weekends, or four days. One day went to shooting scenes for his film Biohazard; the other three were spent filming promotional footage for the movie he wanted to make, Prison Ship.
- After showing footage to producer Jack H. Harris at the American Film Market, Fred Olen Ray got him to finance the film for $200,000 on one condition: it had to be called Star Slammer, not Prison Ship.
- Fred Olen Ray hired Richard Hench to build the sets but decided they cost too much and took too long, so he replaced him with Wayne Springfield, the art director of Forbidden World.
- The cheap production borrowed from other films, using the land rover from Logan's Run, an alien creature from The Deadly Spawn, costumes from Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, and footage from Dark Star and Battle Beyond the Stars.
- For directing the film, Fred Olen Ray was paid a fee of $15,000 plus 50 percent of its worldwide profits.
