Plot summary
James Vanning, a veteran who works as a commercial artist, is the man Los Angeles police want for the murder of his friend Doc Gurston. He keeps to the shadows while two robbers, John and Red, hunt him for the $350,000 they stole from a bank and believe he carried off. An insurance investigator, Ben Fraser, also trails him, hoping to recover the money for his company. In a bar Vanning buys a drink for Marie Gardner, a model with no cash, and the two have dinner together. John and Red take him to a spot by some oil pumps and press him for the money's whereabouts. In flashbacks, Vanning recalls a hunting trip near Moose, Wyoming, and the car crash that brought the robbers into his life.

- Quentin Tarantino has said Nightfall was influential in his creation of the Bruce Willis character in Pulp Fiction. Willis reminded him of a 1950s leading man, a Ralph Meeker, Aldo Ray and Brian Keith kind of man, and the two watched a print of Nightfall together at Willis's house.
- The lead role eventually went to Aldo Ray, who was under long-term contract to Columbia but had been on suspension for refusing the lead in Beyond Mombassa.
