Plot summary
John Kane seems to know when a death is coming in his family, though he is not in touch with them. He returns to his hometown of Hackley, Alabama, where his sister is dying of cancer, and workers at a local factory are pressing to unionize. Town officials take him for an organizer brought in from outside. A search of his room finds a passport full of visa stamps and clippings in several languages, so they wonder whether he is a journalist or a government agent. Doc Thomas, the family's physician for years, thinks John is neither.
