Plot summary
Tyltyl and his sister Mytyl are children of a peasant household. The Queen of Light asks them to seek the Blue Bird of Happiness and hands them a hat fitted with a magic diamond. The diamond calls up the souls of everything around the children, the living and the inanimate alike. Companions travel with them: a dog and a cat, and the human-shaped spirits of bread, milk, sugar, water and fire. Their road leads into the kingdom of the past and the kingdom of the future, and into the queendoms of night and luxury, and at every place they take in more wisdom.

- Elizabeth Taylor flew to London after seeing the first week's dailies and demanded that cinematographer Jonas Gricius, a Soviet Lithuanian inexperienced in color film, be replaced. Freddie Young took over and all of Taylor's scenes were reshot.
- Edward Lewis hired Arthur Penn to direct, but Soviet authorities judged Penn "too liberal", so as a compromise George Cukor was brought in as a "non-political" American director.
- Edward Lewis persuaded the Soviet studios to co-produce the film by promising that Marlon Brando would be cast in a role, but that casting never happened.
- James Coco, cast as the dog Tylo, could digest only bread and butter during the Soviet shoot and suffered a gall bladder attack that forced his replacement, while Elizabeth Taylor dealt with amoebic dysentery throughout filming.
- George Cukor accused Cicely Tyson, who played the Cat, of trying to jinx the production by casting voodoo spells on the set.
- Katharine Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine were signed to star in the film, but both dropped out of the production before shooting began.
