Plot summary
After Vinson Gowrie, a white lumberman, is found shot, Lucas Beauchamp, a Black man in a small Southern town, is charged with the crime and jailed. As he is brought to the jail he calls to Chick Mallison in the watching crowd and asks the boy to fetch his uncle, the lawyer John Gavin Stevens. Chick tells Stevens how Lucas once pulled him from a frozen creek while he was out hunting rabbits with his friend Aleck, then fed him and lent him dry clothes and refused his money. He also recalls a country store where Vinson swung at Lucas and several men restrained him. Stevens initially declines the case; troubled, Chick presses him to defend Lucas, and Stevens goes along to the cell.
