Plot summary
Abraham Lincoln, the president-elect, is to be killed while traveling by rail to Washington, and New York police sergeant John Kennedy has slipped into the conspiracy that means to do it. His boss Simon G. Stroud calls the danger nothing, and militia colonel Caleb Jeffers agrees, so Kennedy resigns and goes after the plotters on his own. On February 22, 1861, he boards the cars for Washington, but Inspector Reilly, who was to hand him his ticket, is nowhere to be found, and Kennedy must run after the departing train and climb aboard. Among the travelers are Charlotte Alsop, a writer against slavery, and West Point cadet Lance Beaufort, who plans to resign his commission and join the Confederate army, with his sister Ginny and their slave Rachel.
