A first
Marriott was the sole Black actor in the cast when he created Joe Mott in 1946, a major role in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, which had its opening at the Martin Beck Theatre on October 9. He later said no other part had pleased him as much.
A role that slipped away
In 1942 Marriott was the first to play Rodney in Janie, a play that ran for 642 performances at five theaters between 1942 and 1944. Michael Curtiz turned it into a film in 1942, but Marriott was not picked for the cast.
