Plot summary
Army private James H. Reese is arrested for assault after a confrontation at a party given by his girlfriend, and his case comes to the attention of the Major, who heads an Army program that treats patients with brain implants. Dr. Frederick is developing a microchip that reaches the pleasure centers of the brain, an attempt to ease aggression in soldiers. Reese suffers from schizophrenia, which makes him a candidate for the experiment, and he is sent to a veterans hospital in Frankfurt, where the Army carries out the work. There the doctors bore into patients' skulls, wire them up and change their brains to make calmer men.
