Plot summary
In New York City's East Village, Frank and Faye Riley run a diner and live in a four-story apartment building. Developer Lacey plans to demolish the block for Lacey Plaza, but the residents refuse to move. Lacey sends thugs led by Carlos to smash the diner and some apartments. Tenants Sid and Muriel Hogenson relocate to a retirement home in New Jersey after the thugs vandalize their apartment. One evening, Frank and the remaining tenants follow Faye to the roof and find two small flying saucer-like creatures, which Faye calls the Fix-Its. The creatures have already repaired the damage and begin helping around the building, acting mischievously by plugging into electrical outlets and feeding on screws, nuts, and bolts.
