Plot summary
Devon Stockard, ten, is obsessed with the fairy tale of Baba Yaga and has recently recovered from open heart surgery. Her parents, Morton and Clare, have moved the family into Camelot Gardens, a gated community in McCade County, Kentucky, and they urge her to make friends and to sell cookies for a charity event that might get her into the local newspaper. Ignoring her mother's instructions, Devon slips out of the community and meets Trent Burns, a young man who mows the neighborhood lawns and lives illegally in a trailer on a nearby state nature reserve. She keeps returning to his land, and a friendship forms, which he asks her to keep secret because of the difference in their ages. While he works, he clashes with Brett, Sean and Nash, a former police officer who guards the community.
