Plot summary
Bob Wiley is a New Yorker living in a near-constant state of distress, afraid to leave his apartment. His exhausted therapist closes his practice and refers him to Dr. Leo Marvin, a controlling psychotherapist who is counting on his new self-help book, Baby Steps, to make him famous. Marvin gives Bob a copy and an appointment for after the Marvin family's vacation at a lake in New Hampshire. Bob, who cannot do without regular reassurance, calls Marvin's telephone exchange until he learns where the family has gone. He talks himself onto a bus and turns up at the lake house, where Fay, Anna and Siggy take a liking to him and Marvin does not.

- Richard Dreyfuss alleged in 2019 that at one point during the production an intoxicated Bill Murray screamed at him, "Everyone hates you! You are tolerated!", and then threw an ashtray at him.
- Dreyfuss's son tweeted in April 2022 that everyone walked off the production and flew back to L.A., and that filming only resumed after Disney hired bodyguards to physically separate his father and Bill Murray between takes.
- Producer Laura Ziskin recalled a disagreement with Murray that ended with him tossing her into a lake; she said in 2003 that he also threatened to throw her across the parking lot and broke her sunglasses, and that having produced a dozen movies she could say it was not common behavior.
- Before Frank Oz was hired to direct, Garry Marshall was considered and Woody Allen was approached to play Dr. Marvin, and was also considered to direct and possibly co-write the script with Tom Schulman; Allen declined the role, and Richard Dreyfuss was cast.
- In April 2015 Richard Dreyfuss sued the Walt Disney Company over the film's profits, claiming Disney had refused to hire his chosen auditor, Robinson and Co.
