Plot summary
Norah Dain works nights as a disc jockey at a Manhattan club and lives alone. Someone who appears to follow her movements telephones her with obscene messages, and a teddy bear with its head cut off shows up in her apartment. Lt. Dave Madden, a police detective whose wife was raped and killed, becomes closely involved in the case and in Norah. He tapes their conversations, listens to recordings of women talking about such calls, and studies pornography and the habits of sex offenders, while his ten-year-old daughter is exposed to the same material. Complaints about him reach his superiors. Marian Freeman, who manages the club, wants to look out for Norah and offers to spend a night at her apartment.
