Plot summary
Detective Sergeant Jack Truman is a juvenile liaison officer in Liverpool, dealing with young people who get into trouble with the police. A series of arson attacks is troubling the city, and a metal laundry tag is left at the scene of each one. Truman's rounds take him to the Murphy household, where Johnnie Murphy, the leader of a local street gang, lives with his sister Cathie. Truman and Cathie grow close. Father Laidlaw, a priest in the district, works against the social problems pressing on the neighborhood.
