Plot summary
The remnants of a British Army brigade headquarters, more than thirty men, make their way through the Burmese jungle, falling back from the Japanese. The senior officer, a brigadier, is among the wounded, so Captain Alan Langford leads them. In an enemy-held village they fight and kill the small Japanese detachment, and among the dead is a colonel carrying a map with markings none of them can read. A Burmese man caught trying to flee is an informer working for the Japanese, and Langford questions him about the colonel and the map. The group's radio is damaged, so a warning cannot be sent to the British headquarters.
