Plot summary
A cable reaches Adam Heyward, a defense lawyer in New York: Sam Baxter, the British soldier who saved his life at Anzio, is in trouble with the law back in England. Heyward's secretary advises him to go himself rather than wire money, so he crosses the Atlantic and arrives in Baxter's village, where his friend is soon to be tried for the killing of Lawrence, a hired stable-hand. Heyward learns that a witness could testify that Baxter shot Lawrence in self-defense. The second witness is a woman who ran off after the shooting and refuses to come forward; Heyward has to find a way to bring her to the stand.
