Plot summary
Assunta Patanè is out with her mother and cousin in her Sicilian seaside village when two men seize her in a car and drive her to an outbuilding. There Vincenzo Macaluso tells her he had meant to abduct her cousin Concetta. Assunta, who has long loved him, declares that he must marry her. The next morning Vincenzo is gone, and her relatives tell her she is a fallen woman whose family is dishonored. By local custom, neither she nor her sisters may marry until a male relative kills the man. Her family has no men, so she takes a pistol and sets out for the United Kingdom to find Vincenzo.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Girl with a Pistol (1968)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's story of bride kidnapping and honour killing drew on real Southern Italian customs, still normalised by Italian law at the time, and on the case of Franca Viola, who had only recently publicly refused to marry the man who raped her.
- Although the film opens in a Sicilian seaside village, those early Sicilian scenes were actually shot in Polignano a Mare in Apulia, not in Sicily.
- The Girl with the Pistol was wildly popular in Italy and was regarded as heralding the emergence of Monica Vitti as one of the country's leading comic stars.
